Wisdom teeth — the four molars erupting between ages 17–25 — cause problems for many. Here's everything you need to know about when they need removing.
When Do Wisdom Teeth Need Removal?
When impacted (stuck under gum/bone), causing repeated infections (pericoronitis), damaging adjacent tooth roots, causing crowding, or trapping food and bacteria.
Not Always Necessary
If fully erupted, functional, and easy to clean — wisdom teeth can stay. Removal is only recommended when they cause genuine problems.
The Procedure
Local anaesthesia, small incision if needed, removal, sutures. 20–45 minutes. You feel pressure but no pain.
Recovery — Simple Extraction
2–3 days of soreness resolving completely within a week.
Recovery — Surgical/Impacted
4–7 days. Swelling peaks on days 2–3 then reduces. Ice packs and elevation help.
Preventing Dry Socket
The most common complication — avoid smoking, spitting and straws for 3 days after extraction. Warm salt water rinses from day 2.
